So I reverted to the mediabuntu version, but now it gives the same behaviour. it was SOOOOO close. I mean, I saw it, I played with it for over an hour, so I know it CAN work. but nothing I do seems to set it back the way it was :( I didn’t read this in time to get it going on Gutsy, but I upgraded to 8.04 and lo, when I started up google earth, it RAN!

Using this fix did not get past initializing screen which then went away.
