I didn't read this in time to get it going on Gutsy, but I upgraded to 8.04 and lo, when I started up google earth, it RAN!

only, it warned me of a new version.
and, being a stupid fool, I downloaded that new version and installed it over the other (which I believe was the medibuntu)

and it ran, but as soon as you zoom to any useful height, the view goes BLACK section by section; if you pan around, a few sections come in, but mostly it is unusably black.

So I reverted to the mediabuntu version, but now it gives the same behaviour.

it was SOOOOO close. I mean, I saw it, I played with it for over an hour, so I know it CAN work. but nothing I do seems to set it back the way it was :(

My problem was with Ubuntu 8.04 and Google earth from Medibuntu or Google bin file, program would start but be flashing from/to black screen and various parts of the program. Using this fix did not get past initializing screen which then went away. Another computer with Nvidia card has no problems

GoogleEarth was hanging at the splash screen. I was able to get it to run by increasing the AGP aperture setting in my motherboard's bios.
